About Us

Hi! Christine and Axel here, the co-founders of Smack Dab. This lovely little company of ours was born in 2015 from our shared vision to offer the Chicago community real, handmade food and amazing service from the heart. Tired of seeing restaurant/bar spaces sitting unused during their off hours and feeling trapped by the financial and logistical realities of opening a brick and mortar in Chicago, we decided to test the waters with a pop up, offering high quality drip coffee and fresh baked pastries a few hours a day out of a hallway in a Rogers Park bar. After the first summer of being open and experiencing lines out the door (huge shout out to the Glenwood Avenue Farmers Market, where most of our earliest customers found us), we knew we were on to something important.

About Smack Dab Chicago - First Location

Three years later (and three pop up locations later!), Smack Dab has finally found a permanent home on Clark Street in Rogers Park. In addition to offering customers a unique breakfast + brunch experience six days a week, we now offer a weekend pizza menu Friday through Sunday nights. Our dine in space is warm and cozy, but you can also get Smack Dab delivered, and we have a robust catering menu (that has lots of gluten free, vegan, and vegetarian options) for parties anywhere from 5 to 500 people.

While we love the art and technique of good cooking, our hope is that above all, you feel loved and welcome at Smack Dab. Every day, our team strives to nourish you with comforting, delicious food in a casual and welcoming atmosphere. We make our products in house using organic, non-GMO flours and sugars and the highest quality produce and proteins available. We aim to use sustainable and locally sourced ingredients whenever possible to keep our food clean yet affordable.

We are passionate about providing delicious options for all kinds of eaters, so you’ll find vegan, vegetarian and gluten free items alongside our traditional products on our food and beverage menus. Everyone deserves to enjoy a good breakfast… or a good slice of pizza!

We love seeing and serving all kinds of folks in our place; we welcome queer, trans, and gender non conforming customers to enjoy our place as a safe, affirming space with gender neutral restrooms.

WHAT MAKES SMACK DAB SPECIAL?
  • We pay a living wage to all employees, and offer healthcare to all full time employees.
  • We have diverted 29,000 pounds of compostable material from the landfill in partnership with Urban Canopy.
  • We donate a percentage of revenue via monetary and in-kind donations to various nonprofits and organizations each year.
  • We strive to mirror the diversity of our Rogers Park community and work to create a safe and inclusive working environment for folks from the LGBTQI community, women and POC.
  • We prioritize supporting vendors and farmers supplying high quality, non GMO and/or organic products.
  • We only cook with rice bran oil, sesame oil or olive oil—no canola, corn or soy oil ever!
  • Almost all of our items can be modified to be vegan and/or GF.
  • We offer a free bi-monthly community dinner (check our social media for dates and menus).
